CRI co-founder and director, former research director, Ariel currently heads the Biology for Global Good Department and mentors the research group leaders at the LPI.  Ariel was the former director of the AIRE master and director of studies of FIRE PhD program, where he continues to teach and mentor and keep enjoying mentoring the Paris Bettencourt iGEM team since 2006.


Ariel is an INSERM tenured research director and serves as the director of INSERM/Université de Paris Cité Systems Engineering and Evolution Dynamics Unit (UMR1284) harboured at LPI. He graduated from the Hebrew University, Jerusalem "Amirim" interdisciplinary program (Chemistry major) and received my M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Chemical Immunology. Following research stints at the Scripps Institute  (California) and MRC (Cambridge), he received EMBO and Marie Curie postdoctoral fellowships to joined the lab of Miro Radman in Paris. His current research revolves around two axes: systems and synthetic biology as well as open and citizen science on SDGs and learning disabilities. His major scientific contributions in past 5 years include publications in Nature, Science, Cell and PNAS journals and were supported by HFSP, EU, national, Axa Fund and MSDAvenir competitive grants.

Co-fondateur et directeur du CRI, ancien directeur de la recherche, Ariel dirige actuellement le département Biology for Global Good et encadre les responsables d’équipe de recherche au Learning Planet Institute. Ariel était l'ancien directeur du master AIRE et directeur des études du programme de doctorat FIRE, où il continue d'enseigner et d'encadrer avec plaisir l'équipe iGEM de Paris Bettencourt depuis 2006.


Ariel est Directeur de recherche titulaire à l'INSERM. Il dirige l'unité d'ingénierie des systèmes et de dynamique de l'évolution INSERM/Université de Paris Cité (UMR1284) hébergée au LPI. Il est diplômé du programme interdisciplinaire "Amirim" de l'Université hébraïque de Jérusalem (majeure chimie) et a obtenu son master et son doctorat en immunologie chimique à l'Institut Weizmann des sciences. Après des séjours de recherche au Scripps Institute (Californie) et au MRC (Cambridge), il a reçu des bourses postdoctorales EMBO et Marie Curie pour rejoindre le laboratoire de Miro Radman à Paris. Ses recherches actuelles s'articulent autour de deux axes : la biologie systémique et synthétique ainsi que la science ouverte et citoyenne sur les ODD et les troubles de l'apprentissage. Ses principales contributions scientifiques au cours des 5 dernières années comprennent des publications dans les revues Nature, Science, Cell et PNAS et ont été soutenues par des subventions compétitives HFSP, UE, nationales, Axa Fund et MSDAvenir. 


My research interests revolve around applying Physical, Chemical and Systems/Synthetic Biological approaches to study key questions in life and death.

Earlier work on variability between clonal individuals, lead to a continuous interest in aging, developin bacteria as a viable model and to studies on the origins of cooperation among individuals.

Major contributions in past 5 years include publications in Nature, Science, Cell and PNAS journals for which I am an occasional reviewer.

I coordinated the Citizen CyberLab European project (citizencyberlab.eu), I take part in the Axa foundation Chair on Longevity. I co-created the CRI Masters and PhD programs, based on novel adaptive learning using ICT and organized numerous interdisciplinary research/education workshops around the world.
